What is Cupping Therapy? Here are 3 Reasons Why You Should Try It!
What Is Cupping Therapy and How Does It Work?
Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine that dates back all the way to the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Middle Easterners. Cupping involves a therapist putting specially designed cups onto your skin for several minutes to create suction. The cups themselves can be made out of several different materials such as glass, silicon and even bamboo. People get cupping therapy done to help with pain, inflammation, deep tissue massage, blood flow and for overall well-being. Many athletes and celebrities are now turning to cupping therapy for pain relief, faster recovery from injuries, and to improve relaxation.
There are two common types of cupping: fixed and moving. Both methods involve placing a cup onto the skin and creating a vacuum. The suction will cause the blood vessels to expand which creates more blood flow to the area and will allow for healing to begin. The overall goal of cupping is to increase circulation to the area of pain and to remove heat and toxins. The cup is usually left on the skin for about 3 minutes.
Fixed cupping involves placing the cups on your body and leaving them in place for a set amount of time. Moving cupping on the other hand involves using the cups for more of a massage purpose. Massage lotion is applied to the part of the body which is being treated and the cups are then moved around the area to help relief pain and massage the deep tissue in the body.
During the cupping, you will feel a tight pulling sensation from the cupping. This sensation is usually relaxing and depending on your comfort and your therapist’s opinion of the problem, the cups may be moved around or left in place. Additionally, more cups may be applied to achieve the desired result.
After your cupping therapy session, your skin will be red from expanding the blood vessels. Some therapists will put an antibiotic ointment to the area that the cupping was used to prevent infection. Your skin will look normal again in about a week after the cupping session.
Here Are 3 Reasons Why You Should Try Cupping
Cupping targets soft tissue with pressure applied to pain points and areas that are injured. Since the cup opens up the blood vessels it allows for the tissues to get important nutrients and oxygen in order to bring relief to the area.
Heals Injuries Faster
Cupping therapy works by drawing blood to the affected area so that new blood vessels can be created and the healing process can be stimulated. Cupping can be used to help heal knots and adhesions, which is why so many athletes have been using this therapy.
Detox Muscle Tissues
Poor circulation can lead to buildup of toxins in the body’s muscle tissues. This buildup can be the root cause of many different health problems. Cupping helps to improve circulation, causing the blood to flow to the area that’s being treated and carries away toxins.
