If you are anything like us, you have spent countless hours and dollars trying to find the best skin care products to remove wrinkles, erase dark spots, even skin tone, and the list goes on and on; only to be left with a drawer filled with partially used products that never lived up to their miraculous claims. It seems there are thousands of products to choose from and choosing the right ones can be overwhelming. Just by following these basic steps, you can be certain that you are doing everything you need to maintain healthy skin and slow the aging process.
This first and most important product in any basic skin care regimen is your cleanser. You are going to want to make sure that you are washing your face in the morning and most importantly, before you go to bed at night. Even if you are not a make-up wearer, it is critical that you cleanse your skin in the evening. It is during the night that our skin repairs itself. Also, collagen production is boosted, harmful free radicals are destroyed and cell damage is rectified. A face full of makeup, sunscreen and environmental pollutants prevents nighttime skin renewal.

- Vitamin C
Your next step in the morning after you cleanse is the application of a vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is the lighten-it, tighten-it, brighten-it serum that can take 10 years off your face!
While oral supplementation with vitamin C is important for maintaining one’s overall health, it’s not very effective at increasing concentrations within the skin. The most effective method is topical application with a serum. Look for products that contain L-ascorbic acid or magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Both are effective forms of topical vitamin C. - Sun Protection
Sun protection, by far, is the MOST important daytime product. You need to be applying an SPF of at least 30 every day; no matter if it is sunny or cloudy, hot or cold. Sun protection has come a long way over the years and now we have products that don’t even feel like you are wearing sunscreen. So as you are reaching for a daytime moisturizer, make sure the label reads SPF 30 or higher!
Now that we have protected our skin during the day, what do we do before we go to bed at night? As mentioned earlier, the most critical step is to remove all traces of makeup and environmental pollutants that have accumulated on the skin throughout the day. Grab that cleanser you used in the morning and use it again at night.
Next, apply a vitamin A based serum or cream. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that unclogs pores, boosts collagen, and speeds cell turnover to even out discoloration and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Whether as a serum or combined in an evening moisturizer, retinoids remain the gold standard in the battle against aging skin.
- Nighttime Moisturizer
Choosing a moisturizer to incorporate in your evening routine can be a little tricky. This is where we need to take a look at our individual skin type. If you have dry or aging skin it is important to choose a heavier emollient-based cream to lock moisture into the skin. Look for products that contain Argon Oil, Shea Butter, Squalene Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) or Jojoba Seed Oil. For normal skin choose light to mid-weight moisturizers that maintain the skin’s normal moisture balance. If you are more prone to oily skin, choose a moisturizer or serum that is free of any oils but rich in humectants like hyaluronic acid and urea. These keep the skin hydrated without feeling greasy.
